Oakland Middle School’s annual magazine, The OMS Chronicle, is celebrating its fifth anniversary by highlighting a former student contributor.
The 2025-2026 cover story features Oakland High School student Rogina Shaker, who recently published her first novel, “The Way She Went.”
Now a sophomore, Shaker began the project as a sixth-grade student at OMS.
“Rogina was a committed and talented contributor to The OMS Chronicle during her time at OMS, writing as both a student journalist and a member of our literary section,” said Evelyn Egan, a seventh-grade math teacher who serves as the publication’s sponsor. “Her growth as a writer was evident early on, making her recent achievement especially meaningful for our current students, who now see a tangible example of what is possible through their own work.”
The story follows 16-year-old named Dorothy as she navigates various hardships after moving from Georgia to New York with her mother. Shaker calls it a story “for teenagers who don’t like reading” and opens up about the challenges she faced as a young student and writer.
A member of the prestigious National Scholastic Press Association, The OMS Chronicle features stories on students and staff, as well as photography, creative writing, and sketches.
